Global primary aluminum market supply shortage of 916,000 tons from January to July 2022

According to foreign news on September 21, a report released by the World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS) on Wednesday showed that the global primary aluminum market was in short supply by 916,000 tons from January to July 2022, and 1.558 million tons in 2021.

In the first seven months of this year, global primary aluminum demand was 40.192 million tons, down 215,000 tons from the same period last year. Global primary aluminium production fell by 0.7% during the period. At the end of July, total reportable stocks were 737,000 tonnes below December 2021 levels.

As of the end of July, the total LME inventory was 621,000 tons, and by the end of 2021, it was 1,213,400 tons. Stocks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange decreased by 138,000 tons from the end of 2021.

Overall, from January to July 2022, global primary aluminum production decreased by 0.7% year-on-year. China’s output is expected to be 22.945 million tons, accounting for about 58% of the world’s total. China’s apparent demand decreased by 2.0% year-on-year, while the output of semi-manufactured products increased by 0.7%. China became a net importer of unwrought aluminium in 2020. From January to July this year, China exported 3.564 million tons of semi-finished aluminum products such as aluminium profiles for windows and doorsAluminium Extrusion Profile,Aluminium Solar Panel Frame and so on , and 4.926 million tons in 2021. Exports of semi-manufactured products increased by 29% year-on-year.

Demand in Japan increased by 61,000 tons, and demand in the United States increased by 539,000 tons. Global demand is down 0.5% in the January-July 2022 period.

In July, the global primary aluminum production was 5.572 million tons, and the demand was 5.8399 million tons.
